Made the mistake of camping by a swamp in Texas. Holy hell nuttin stops the skeeters at night not even deet. Crazy.

Another Corps of Engineers campground — I needed a place to recharge (literally and figuratively) and relax for a change from the rustic camping lifestyle.
If you notice the dog, she came over after I finished setting up camp and plopped into a chair. She stayed for awhile so I asked the campground host about her - he thinks she was left behind by someone, sigh.
I would have loved to adopt her but am just not in the space for it. The host ended up taking care of her so happy endings!

Saw this on the way to Magnolia Ridge campground and just had to pull over.
The interior and exterior brings fond memories of old Florida — the one I grew up in and miss dearly.
I was welcomed with warm smiles and a pat on the back by Joe. His wife’s the cook and oh-my an excellent one. Their BBQ pork sandwich was drool-worthy.
They also make their own pork rinds; I grabbed a bag of their BBQ flavored ones. Yummy.
The best thing about this place?
The way they welcomed me like family — I was tired and worn out from the long drive. Their spirits rejuvenated and propelled me onward.
These quirky, out of way places never fail to delight.
Am back on the road camping again full time for a good while. I’ll be posting updates and photos from wanderings soon. Hope all is well with you!

One thing I love about Texas is they have lots of picnic/rest areas scattered throughout — not just on interstates but also highways and county roads. You’re allowed to stay overnight in ’em.
